Brian Green a.k.a. "Footwork", choreographer, teacher, and dancer, began dancing at 8 years old. He studied Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, and African for 5 years from Phil Black, at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and with the Joffrey Ballet. In 1978, his brother, Oscar, introduced him to "Poppin", a dance from California. Wanting to learn more, Brian started got involved with the NYC underground dance culture.
By the mid 1980's, Brian was an integral part of the NYC underground scene. House and Freestyle culture flourished at Roseland, 4Ds, Paradise Garage, and other clubs in the City. 1986, he met into two people, Damien and Spanky, who were at that time at the center of House culture. Brian, inspired by them, combined club dancing, Hip Hop, his mother's intricate Hustle, Salsa, and African steps, and his own rhythms from Tap, eventually spawning a unique very fast footwork style that eventually lead to Brian's nickname, "Footwork," and recognition in NYC and abroad.
Brian has choreographed and/or danced with such artists as Mariah Carey, MYA!, Foxy Brown, Missy Eliott, Salt n' Pepa, Busta Rhymes, Barbara Tucker, EVE, Kraze, MAW (Masters at Work), and many more. In the last 10 years, his teaching has focused on the history of Funk, Hip-hop, and House culture and the techniques and styles of Hip Hop dance. Brian has taught throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Currently, Brian's new company, WORLD SOUL, has focused on showing audiences the passion, history, and techniques of these dance styles. In 2001 he won the ACA (American Choreographers Awards) recipient for Best Hip-Hop Choreography in a Music Video for his choreography in the video, "FREE," by the artist MYA!
